Litha, Summer Solstice or Midsummer

Herbs that are best for Litha are Mugwort, Vervain, Chamomile, Rose, Lily, Oak, Lavender, Ivy, Yarrow, Fern, Elder, Thyme, Daisy and Carnation. St Johns is another.

Summer Solstice is virtually the best time to perform magic of all kinds.
Healings, love magic, and protections are especially suitable at this time.
If the ritual is being celebrated outdoors herbs can be dried over the ritual fire.
With care leap over the fire for purification and renewed energy.
Fresh fruits are widely used and respected for the Summer Solstice.

Before the rite, you can make up a small cloth pouch filled with herbs for the list above.
Mentally pour all your troubles,, problems, pains, sorrow and illnesses.
Tie the pouch shut with a red string. Place it on your altar for use during the rite.
Your cauldron should either be on or near your altar.
Even if you use candles to mark the four quarters, a red candle should placed upon your altar. For outdoor rituals, light a fire however small- and drop the pouch into the fire.
Then go on with your normal lighting of your candles and censer, cast a circle do a Blessing cant, invoke the Goddess and Gods.

History of Litha

The celebration of Midsummer’s Eve was from ancient times linked to the summer solstice. People believed that mid-summer plants, especially Calendua had extraordinary healing powers and they therefore picked them on this night. Bonfires were lit to protect against evil spirits which were believed to wander freely when the sun was turning southwards again. In later years, witches were also thought to be on their way to meetings with other powerful beings, though this is not the case today.

Litha
Litha is usually celebrated on December 21st, but varies somewhat from the 20th to the 23rd, dependant upon the Earth’s rotation around the Sun. According to the old folklore calendar, Summer begins on Beltane (May 1st) and ends on Lughnassadh (August 1st), with the Summer Solstice midway between the two, marking MID-Summer. This makes more logical sense than suggesting that summer begins on the day when the Sun’s power begins to wane and the days grow shorter. The most common other names for this holiday are the Summer Solstice or Midsummer, and it celebrates the arrival of Summer, when the hours of daylight are longest. The Sun is now at the highest point before beginning its slide into darkness.
Humanity has been celebrating Litha and the triumph of light since ancient times. On the Wheel of the Year Litha lies directly across from Yule, the shortest day of the calendar year, that cold and dark winter turning when days begin to lengthen and humanity looks wistfully toward warmth, sunlight and growing things. Although Litha and Yule are low holidays or lesser sabats in the ancient parlance, they are celebrated with more revel and merriment than any other day on the wheel except perhaps Samhain ). The joyous rituals of Litha celebrate the verdant Earth in high summer, abundance, fertility, and all the riches of Nature in full bloom. This is a time of strong magic and empowerment, traditionally the time for handfasting or weddings and for communication with the spirits of Nature. At Litha, the veils between the worlds are thin; the portals between “the fields we know” and the worlds beyond stand open. This is an excellent time for rites of divination.

Meditation

Meditation and breathing go hand in hand.

With meditation and breathing there are many different ways that they can be done, it is personal choice.
With breathing the main object is to use your diaphragm.
Your exhaled breath should be twice as long as your inhaled breath, or you can hold your breath in between inhaling and exhaling.

So what is meditation and where did it come from?
A lot of people think that meditation is an Asian thing, but it has been in Europe as long as it has been in Asia it was just known as Going within.
Meditation is the focus of the mind on one thing.

Meditation is a key factor to any form of Witchcraft, Wiccan and other disciplines.

Meditation may sound easy but it requires training, and if you are like me who always seems to have 100 and 1 things to do it is hard.

Keep in mind that it is important to learn meditation because it will not only help you with your Witchcraft but with your everyday life.

Benefits of meditation:
Stress relief
Greater ability to study
More productive
Calmer in a crisis situations
Stop the chatter in the conscious mind
Ability to focus on one situation or problem at a time
Spiritual growth
Self improvements

People who meditate develop sensitivity to other people, and to all forms of life as well as the Earth.
It also heightens the ability to connect with the life focuses around us.
They gain a sense of belonging.

Problems with Meditating:
Mind wondering
Mind saying that you are itchy
Mind saying that you are uncomfortable
Uncomfortable feelings
Thoughts about anything

The reason for this is because your mind is not use to this type of exercise. Your mind usually in undisciplined and runs wild but pay no attention to it.
The best way to deal with these problems (irritations) is to put them out of your mind one by one and return to concentrating on your breathing.

Found here on my website: http://witchesa-jeanny.com.au/page/397849780 and here http://witchesa-jeanny.com.au/page/338286205

It will take practice to master.
Believe me I have not mastered it yet.
I have a very active mind, which drives me crazy when I try to meditate but I am getting there.

If you practice your breathing and meditation everyday you may be surprised at how much calmer and energized you feel.

Beltane

The 31st of October

For the Northern hemisphere it is Halloween or Samhain.

For the Southern hemisphere it’s the Beltane festival.

Beltane has long been marked with feast and rituals.
Many people get up early to pick flowers and green branches from gardens, using them to decorate their homes, themselves and the May pole.
The flowers and green branches symbolize the goddess and the may pole symbolize the god.
Beltane marks the return of vitality, of passion and hopes consummated.
Most Wiccans now use the cauldron as the focal point of the Beltane ritual.
Traditional arts of this time of the year are weaving and plaiting for the joining together of two substances to form a third; the spirit of Beltane.
Traditional foods come from the dairy group; Ice-cream, yogurts, custards and oatmeal cakes are appropriate.
The best place to celebrate Beltane is near trees. If you can’t be near trees then get a small potted tree to bring into your circle. Decorate the tree with charms.
Things like bags filled with scented flowers, flower chains, carvings, strings of beads anything like these you can think of.

Becoming a Witch

Many people ask how, do you become a Witch.
The answer to that is you do not become a Witch…they just are a Witch.
It is a matter of finding the Witch inside you.
While the answer is simple; to some, it can be quite difficult to do for others.
The Witch comes from within you.
Reading books, joining covens and learning Wicca does not make you a Witch.
Once you have decided to embrace your inner Witch and embark on the life-enhancing and joyful spiritual path.
Once you have decided to be a Witch then the learning starts on how to work rituals and magick, methods of raising, containing and releasing power, how to work with the energies of the moon and earth and the principles of magick which most Witchcraft is based on:
The Witches Rede….very important to being a Witch.
In saying all of that this is something I would suggest you take time and a great deal of thought about before you make your decision.
It has taken me many years to decide and finely I have looked inside myself and I are now ready to for fill my destiny.
I know quite a few Witches and a lot of them suggest that one of the best books to have is Scott Cunningham “Wicca, Guide for the solitary Practitioner” This book is easy to follow. I have a copy of this book.
You will find this book at www.witchesa-jeanny.com.au/page/200428209
The book is priced at $24.25 & postage.
Every thing you need is inside yourself.

What it is to be a Witch

I personally think the answer to this question is to simply say it is a way of life.

I live my life the way that I feel it should be lived, open and honest.
I am no better than anyone else, I do not judge, I try and help as many as I can. (all creatures)
We are your everyday person, who does some of the same things you do, with one exception a Witch does not bring harm to any living creature for any reason.
To me being a Witch means everything natural. I love the healing properties of gemstones.
For the good of all, bring no harm to anything or anyone for any reason.
We all come in contact with negativity each and everyday. We must focus on the positive.
With anything in life the meaning of being Witch is different for each of us, but I found this on the net and I like this definition:
Being a Witch
Means enjoying life
Being a Witch
Means giving love
Being a Witch
Means honoring the deities
Being a Witch
Is being ourselves.

So to me what it means to be a Witch is to be the best you can be obey the rules from Mother Earth and give back as she gives us so much.
I am not perfect and never will be, but I do the best I can, asking for nothing in return.
To me this is what being a Witch means….

What is Magic?

Magic or Magick is the process of causing change to energies through the use of your will.
Aleister Crowley added the K from “Kabbalah” to differentiate the real magick from the sleight of hand and stage tricks.

Magick is the guidance and control of energy to a desired destination or goal. We can manipulate that energy and make changes to occur.
Magic is a general term which has many different branches and areas.
Some of the branches of Magick are Herbalism, Aromatherapy, Healing, Shamanism, Elemental Magic, Sympathetic Magic and many others.
Witchcraft is an area of Magick which is generally based on Spell casting.

The word magic comes from either the Greek word megus which means “great” in science, or from the Greek word magein meaning the science and religion of Zoroaster.
Numerous definition of magic has been offered by many but a precise description escapes us.
Though systems of magic exist; some are quite complex. Magic remains an individualistic experience. Every person who practices magic sees it in a different way.

Magic is neutral and amoral. It can be used for good, evil or ambiguous purposes, depending on the intent of the practitioner.

There are so many forms and definitions of magic so I am going to skip most of them and give you the definition of magic for Witchcraft.
Witchcraft magic contains elements of folk magic, ceremonial magic and sex magic.
The Witch works within a magical circle and uses four primary tools, which correspond to the elements; the athame-for fire, the pentacle-for earth, the chalice- for water and the wand-for air.
The Witch invokes the forces of nature, the elements and the element spirits that rule the elements and appeal to the goddess and horned god. Most Witches believe strongly in working only for good purposes. The Witch uses colour, scents, sound, movement, symbols and visual images in rituals to create their magic.

Gardner states eight ways to create the powers of magic.
1. Meditation or concentration.
2. Chants, spells and invocations.
3. Trance or astral projection
4. Incense, wine and drugs
5. Dancing
6. Blood control with the use of cords
7. Scourging
8. The Great Rite.

For Pagans and Witches, magic is a part of everyday life. The world itself is magical.
Not all pagans and Witches practice the same type of magic, some prefer ceremonial magic, others prefer folk magic and still others prefer eco-magic.

Eco-magic based on natural earth energies and the resident “spirits of the land”
Magic is to be used for growth and betterment.
